Lesson goals
- Tell «who you are» from «what you may do».
- Know the benefits of single sign-on.
| Question | Name | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Who are you? | Authentication | Your college account |
| What may you do? | Authorization | A teacher edits only their own site |
With single sign-on the college keeps one account per person, and every system trusts it instead of keeping passwords of its own.
- One password to remember.
- Disabling the account stops sign-in everywhere at once.
- Systems never hold passwords.
Secrets — passwords and keys — never go in the code.
Exercise
Why is signing in not enough to edit any page?
Answer
Sign-in answers «who you are» only; editing also needs «is this your site?».
